Synopsis

A horse is about to give birth. She has almost completely lost her eyesight. I spend the night before with her in the stable. We have a conversation about what we see, hear, remember and dream of. The currents of our conversation become the lines airplanes leave behind in the sky, the underwater bubbles coming out of the sci-fi ocean floor, the currents of water-landscapes on other planets. In other words: we drift off, together.

I look through my camera for the origins of stuttering; in water and its many fractured reflections, in the B-tone of my first clarinet through which I practice to breath, in a horse’s horizontal iris, and in the stutters I encounter.

A gentle road-movie, from the stable at night, to the edges of the Mississippi River, the 1953 flood in Zeeland, The Netherlands, to the Drina in Bosnia. A film full of double comma’s, full of little worlds and islands, of beginnings and endings. A double comma does what the period cannot: an open ending, a bump, a slight interruption; it alters time and holds the word, and sometimes the entire sentence, in midair – like a stutter.

Synopsis

A brother and a sister both use their shared family archive – one made by their mother, the other made by their father – as a way to reach each other, to talk to each other and reside alongside each other, separated by distance and together in proximity, and vice versa. A story of many paths, a conversation of many voices unfolds, touching on memory, language and shared pain.

Synopsis

Two siblings look at the vacation footage their father filmed during the weeks spent with him each year. To entertain them on the road trip, he asked, “Why is music so much more powerful than geology?” Now, some twenty years later, through the categories of ‘music’ and ‘geology,’ the brother and sister ask themselves what they see, what they remember, and attempt at a means of collective memory-making.

Synopsis

Ruku mojeju revolves around a sensory understanding of monastic life. In a convent on a small island between Montenegro and Albania, fifteen nuns – mostly young women, one of them blind – live their daily lives in a rhythm of work and prayer, and the endlessly undulating movements of nature. Over a period of nine years, the documentary developed as a result of the filmmaker’s intense involvement in this small community. Rather than questioning the morality of the institution of religion, Ruku mojeju explores religious material practices and sensorial experiences as a choreography in and of itself. In the attempt to understand religion through lived practices, the film hones in on taste, smell, sound, colour, movement and touch. And therefore, the body, or more precisely, the affectivity of the body becomes the subject of the film. The search for an understanding of faith from the outside, leads to the question of how people’s religious convictions shape inside them. This, in turn, leads to wondering about form as the carrier of faith.

Synopsis

Looking for Horses is a film about a friendship between the filmmaker and a fisherman who lost his hearing during the Bosnian war and retreated to a lake to live in solitude. The filmmaker, son of Bosnian parents, struggles to communicate as he lost his mother-tongue due to a heavy stutter and growing up with many different languages. Despite their hearing and speech limitations, a strong friendship unfolds between the young man and the veteran, as the fisherman shares his world of the lake. The camera mediates their growing bond. Taking the shape of a gentle western, Looking for Horses is a poetic documentary on trauma, survival, and connection.
